anike portraying sojourner truth

Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was born into slavery and at 28 "walked away" from her bondage to serve her true calling as a great human rights leader. Sojourner worked across the United States in the abolition and women's rights movements; advocated for women to take on government leadership, transported freedmen to employment in the western and northern parts of the country and integrated the streetcar system in Washington DC. Sojourner inspired prisoners, civil war soldiers, unwed teenage mothers, and the millions who continue to hear her remarkable speeches today.
